Every year on December 12, the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is a title for Mary, the Mother of God, specifically referring to her appearance to Saint Juan Diego in what is now Mexico in 1531. Her miraculous appearances and the miraculous image she left behind, were the catalyst for a major conversion of indigenous American societies. Mary, under the title of 'Our Lady of Guadalupe' was designated as the Patroness of the Americas by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000.
The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine features a recreation of Tepeyac Hill, the place where Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego. Our Tepeyac Hill is topped by a 12-foot statue of Our Lady in the style of the image she left behind, accompanied by an 8-foot statue of Juan Diego.
Our Lady leads all of us closer to Jesus, her Son; forever echoing to the faithful her admonition in the Gospel, "Do whatever He tells you" (John 2:5).
